The Story of Schrikkloof

Every journey has a beginning

The story of The Lions Foundation started in the Netherlands at Stichting Leeuw, which is a professional rescue centre for big cats in need, offering unique animal welfare facilities, including a world-renowned hunting simulator.

Beginning of Schrikkloof

Establishment of The Lions Foundation

In 2019, with the support of donors, Schrikkloof Private Nature Reserve in South Africa was acquired, leading to the establishment of The Lions Foundation and the Schrikkloof Lodge. This 1,000-hectare reserve in Bela-Bela now serves as the home of The Lions Foundation, ultimately providing space for up to 70 big cats.

Stichting Leeuw, in collaboration with its sister organisation, The Lions Foundation, is currently providing care for 55 big cats. By 2028, the goal is to permanently house 30 big cats in Anna Paulowna and 70 in South Africa, ensuring the best possible future for these incredible animals.

Stichting Leeuw Rescue Centre

Founded in 2011 as a private initiative, the foundation Stichting Leeuw is based at Dierenpark Hoenderdaell in Anna Paulowna in the north part of the province North-Holland and is open to the public daily. It was established with the firm belief that these magnificent animals deserve a dignified, proud, and respectful life. Since its inception, Stichting Leeuw has rescued and cared for over 90 big cats, including lions, tigers, and panthers, providing them with a safe and loving environment.

Stichting Leeuw believes that a natural habitat contributes far more to the well-being of big cats than a zoo environment. To date, 24 animals have been relocated from the Netherlands to South Africa, allowing Stichting Leeuw to take in new rescues in the Netherlands.

Rescue & Conservation Centre

In 2023 Schrikkloof acquired a derelict predator zoo, bordering on the Schrikkloof Reserve. Here, native predators were showcased and also bred for hunting or illegal purposes. We saved this park and its animals and are turning it into a Rescue & Conservation Centre.

Most animals at the Rescue Centre still live in old enclosures we inherited. We’re now creating spacious new habitats — covering 20 hectares and shaped like a lion’s head, visible from the air — to give leopards, wild dogs, hyenas, servals, and caracals the freedom they deserve. Through this project and our volunteer program, we raise awareness for animal welfare and invite others to take part in protecting wildlife in need.
