The Lions Foundation takes care of big cats from emergency situations, such as circuses, war situations and private possession. At the The Lions Foundation Rescue and Conservation Centre, native predators and other animals are rescued and rehabilitated. For more information: The Lions Foundation

For safety reasons, we cannot accommodate children under 8 at Schrikkloof. There are no safety measures for young children in place. Wild animals roam freely and could be a potential danger and the landscape has several precipices. Also, we have no babysitting facilities while parents are away on safari or visiting our lions. They is also no playground for children.
Our lions are all traumatised, so, for the children’s and lion’s safety, we do not allow children to visit them. As our rescued lions are still recovering, we ask for your understanding in keeping Schrikkloof a tranquil, adult-friendly retreat.
Schrikkloof Private Nature Reserve, home of The Lions Foundation, has a spa or wellness centre. We offer a variety of soothing treatments and facilities designed to restore both body and mind. Guests can enjoy full body, hand, head, neck, back, foot, or even couples massages, each designed to soothe muscles, calm the mind, and restore a sense of balance and well-being.
The spa also features a peaceful lounge, sauna, hot tub, and comfortable loungers where you can relax at your own pace. From the jacuzzi, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the reserve. It is not uncommon to see giraffes walking by, or to simply close your eyes and listen to the chorus of birdsong around you.
Private parking is free of charge. You can park at the accommodation. Reservations are not necessary.
Absolutely. Schrikkloof is perfect for small groups of family, friends, or colleagues.
Our two bush chalets Impala can host up to six guest (3 persons per room) and are ideal for shared stays, while our conference facilities make us a great choice for intimate retreats or team getaways.

Schrikkloof offers a private conference room for intimate meetings, workshops or group retreats, complete with catering and tranquil outdoor spaces for breakout sessions.
Schrikkloof is a two-hour drive from Johannesburg, with the lodge just 3 km from the main gate. The last 20 minutes of your journey are off-road. From the entrance gate, you will drive approximately 3 kilometers on an unpaved, hilly road to reach the main lodge.
Transfers from OR Tambo International Airport or even helicopter arrivals can be arranged on request. View travel details & directions.

Schrikkloof enjoys warm, sunny days and cool, comfortable nights throughout the year. From October to March, summer transforms the landscape into a lush green paradise, while April to September brings mild, dry winter weather – perfect for crisp mornings and exceptional wildlife viewing. The best time to visit depends entirely on your preferences: choose summer for vibrant scenery and dramatic skies, or winter for clear air and easier animal spotting as wildlife gathers around water sources.
The Limpopo climate is pleasantly warm year-round, with average daytime temperatures ranging between 21°C and 28°C, and an annual average of around 26°C. At night, temperatures drop to about 5°C during the coldest months and around 17°C in the warmer months, offering refreshing evenings after sunny days.

Thanks to its favorable weather conditions, Limpopo is a wonderful destination all year round – with plenty of sunshine and relatively low rainfall, making any season a good time to visit Schrikkloof.
High season runs from February–April and October–December, when the bushveld is at its most vibrant and demand is higher.
Low season, from May–September and January, offers a quieter atmosphere and cooler temperatures.

Our knowledgeable ranger will guide you through the breathtaking wildlife of Schrikkloof Private Nature Reserve. Depending on the day, your safari may include a visit to The Lions Foundation and the donkey sanctuary.
Schrikkloof is home to an impressive variety of African wildlife, offering unforgettable sightings during your guided nature drives, walkes or even from the comfort of the lodge. Large herds of buffalo, giraffe, zebra, sable antelope, kudu, nyala, eland, wildebeest, hartebeest and waterbuck still roam freely across the reserve’s rolling hills and open plains. Each drive reveals something new – from elegant antelope moving through the bush to the powerful presence of a solitary buffalo.
Beyond these iconic species, the estate is also a haven for more elusive and nocturnal animals. Guests may encounter warthog, bush pig, porcupine, baboon, and even rarer species such as the aardvark, aardwolf, and brown hyena.
If you’re very lucky, you might even spot the occasional leopard or a passing pack of wild dogs, adding a thrilling edge to your safari experience.
Please note: The lions at The Lions Foundation are still recovering and potentially dangerous. For your safety, you will be asked to follow the ranger’s instructions and sign a waiver before visiting.

However, staying overnight allows you to fully immerse yourself in the reserve and enjoy early morning or evening game drives. With your overnight stay you also support the important work of The Lions Foundation.
